Bi-fold shutters, folded back — Toronto

How they work

Fold them back and the opening is yours

Bi-fold shutters — also called folding shutters — are panels hinged together in pairs. Instead of swinging open as one wide panel, they concertina against one another and stack to one side, the same motion as a folding closet door.

A single shutter panel wide enough for a doorway would be unwieldy, and it would need half the room to swing into. Hinging the panels solves that. Two folds later the shutters sit flat to the side and the doorway is clear — with the louvres still there to control light the moment you close them again. It’s the configuration we fit most often to patio doors, walk-in closets and laundry openings, and it’s part of our wider California shutter range.

Why bi-fold

The clearest opening of any shutter

The clearest walkway

Of all the shutter configurations, bi-fold clears the most of the doorway — worth it if you carry laundry, groceries or a tray through it daily.

Folds flat, stacks tidy

Panels concertina against one another and sit compactly to one side rather than sweeping through the middle of the room.

Perfect for closets and laundry

Adjustable louvres let air move through a closet, laundry or pantry — something a solid folding door has never managed.

Built to your width

Panel widths are calculated around your exact opening, so the folds land evenly and the stack sits where you want it.

Make it yours

Options for your opening

Nothing here is off the shelf. Your bi-fold is drawn around your opening — how many folds, which side they stack on, and how the louvres and finish tie into the rest of the room.

Good to know

Bi-fold shutter questions

What are bi-fold shutters?
Bi-fold shutters are shutter panels hinged together in pairs. Instead of swinging open as one wide panel, they fold back on themselves and stack neatly to one side of the opening — the same motion as a folding closet door. It’s the configuration that clears the most of a doorway.
What is the difference between bi-fold and bypass shutters?
Bi-fold panels fold in on themselves and stack to the side, opening up most of the doorway, but the folded stack projects into the room by roughly the width of one panel. Bypass panels slide past one another on a track and stay flat against the door, taking up almost no depth, but one panel always covers part of the glass. Bi-fold is the better choice when you want a clear walkway; bypass is better when floor space is tight.
How much space does a folded bi-fold stack take up?
When folded back, the panels sit perpendicular to the wall and project into the room by about the width of a single panel. We size the panels around your opening and your furniture during the in-home measurement, so the stack lands where it won’t be in the way.
Can bi-fold shutters be used on closets and laundry rooms?
Yes, and they’re a favourite for exactly that. A bi-fold shutter opens a closet, laundry or pantry all the way across, and the adjustable louvres let air move through the space in a way a solid door cannot.
What material works best for a laundry or closet opening?
Laundry rooms and closets see humidity and daily handling, so vinyl and PVC are usually the sensible choice — both wipe clean and won’t warp. In a bedroom or a formal room where you want a stained finish, wood shutters are worth the difference.
Do you install bi-fold shutters across the GTA?
Yes. Starlight Shutter measures, manufactures and installs custom bi-fold shutters across Toronto, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, North York, Newmarket, Aurora, Oshawa, Mississauga and surrounding areas.
