Custom sliding bypass track shutters across a patio door in a Toronto home

Bypass track shutters — patio door, Toronto

How they work

Shutters that slide, not swing

Bypass shutters — also called sliding shutters or track shutters — hang from a track fixed above your door and slide past one another, the way sliding closet doors do. Each panel moves independently, so you open one side of the opening without anything swinging into the room.

A patio door is usually the widest piece of glass in a Toronto home and the one that gets used most. Vertical blinds clatter and warp; drapery ends up dragged across the threshold every time someone steps outside. A bypass track carries real California shutters across the whole opening and keeps them flat against the glass — no stacking space required.

Why bypass

Made for the widest openings in the house

Built for wide openings

Patio and balcony doors are too wide for one hinged panel. A bypass track carries the panels across the entire opening, however much glass you have.

Nothing swings into the room

Panels travel parallel to the wall instead of opening inward — a real advantage in condos and rooms where furniture sits close to the glass.

Light and privacy, on your terms

Tilt the louvres for filtered afternoon light, close them for privacy at night, or slide the panels right back for a clear view of the yard.

Made and fitted by us

We measure the opening, build the panels in our own Toronto facility, and install them ourselves — so the fit and the travel are right first time.

Up close

Watch the panels glide

Photographs can’t show how a bypass system feels to use. Here are the panels moving across a Toronto patio door — one hand, one smooth pass, and the doorway is open.

Options for your opening

Because we manufacture in-house, nothing is off the shelf. Your track layout is drawn around your door — which panel is the active one, which side you walk through, and how much wall you have to stack against.

Good to know

Sliding shutter questions

What are bypass track shutters?
Bypass shutters hang from a slim track above your door and slide past one another, much like sliding closet doors. Each panel moves independently, so you can open one side of the opening without anything swinging into the room. They’re the most common way to fit California shutters to a patio or balcony door in Toronto homes.
Should I choose bypass or bi-fold shutters for my patio door?
Bypass shutters slide sideways and stay flat against the door, so they take up almost no room. Bi-fold shutters fold back on themselves and clear more of the opening, but the folded stack projects into the room. If floor space is tight, choose bypass. If you want the doorway as clear as possible for entertaining or foot traffic, look at bi-fold. We’ll walk you through both at your in-home consultation.
Do sliding shutters take up space in the room?
Very little. The panels travel parallel to the wall rather than opening into the room, which is why bypass shutters work so well in condos, narrow dining rooms and anywhere furniture sits close to the glass. The track and panels need a small amount of depth in front of the door frame, which we confirm when we measure.
Can bypass shutters be used on closet openings?
Yes. The same bypass track works beautifully on wide closet, laundry and pantry openings, and gives you adjustable louvres for airflow instead of a solid door.
What material should I choose for a patio door?
Patio doors take sun, humidity and daily handling, so most clients choose vinyl or PVC — both are moisture-resistant and wipe clean. Wood shutters are the choice when the room is formal and you want a stained finish. We’ll bring samples so you can see them in your own light.
Do you install sliding shutters across the GTA?
Yes. Starlight Shutter measures, manufactures and installs custom sliding and bypass track shutters across Toronto, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, North York, Newmarket, Aurora, Oshawa, Mississauga and surrounding areas.
