Custom roller blinds in a bright Toronto living room

Custom roller blinds — Toronto installation

Form meets function

Clean lines, total light control

Roller blinds are a single panel of fabric on a smooth roller tube — minimal, modern, and available in everything from soft light-filtering to full blackout. Solar shades are roller blinds made from an open-weave fabric that cuts glare and blocks UV while keeping your view to the outside. Both come cordless or motorized.

They’re the most versatile window covering we carry: light-filtering fabrics soften daylight in living rooms and kitchens, blackout fabrics keep bedrooms and media rooms genuinely dark, and solar weaves protect your floors, furniture, and art from fading without closing off the view you bought the home for. Roller shades are a natural fit anywhere in the home, and sit comfortably alongside the rest of our custom blinds & shades range.

Which is right for you

Roller or solar?

They’re built the same way — the difference is the fabric. Here’s how to choose.

Roller blinds

Light control first

  • Solid fabric, from light-filtering to full blackout
  • Best for bedrooms, media rooms, and bathrooms where privacy and darkness matter
  • Blackout fabrics keep a room genuinely dark for sleep
  • Huge range of colours and textures to match any interior
Solar shades

View & UV first

  • Open-weave fabric rated by “openness” (1%–10%)
  • Best for living rooms, offices, and any window with a view worth keeping
  • Blocks UV and cuts glare while you still see outside by day
  • A lower openness (1–3%) gives more privacy; higher (5–10%) keeps a clearer view

Roller blind & solar shade questions

What’s the difference between roller blinds and solar shades?
They’re built the same way — both are a single fabric panel on a roller tube. The difference is the fabric: roller blinds use a solid fabric (light-filtering, room-darkening, or blackout) for privacy and light control, while solar shades use an open-weave fabric that blocks UV and glare while keeping your view to the outside.
What does “openness factor” mean on solar shades?
Openness is the percentage of the fabric that is open weave, which controls how much you can see through it. A 1–3% openness gives strong UV protection and more daytime privacy with a softer view; a 5–10% openness keeps a clearer, more open view with slightly less privacy. We’ll show you samples at different levels so you can choose for each window.
Can roller blinds be fully blackout?
Yes. Roller blinds are available in true blackout fabrics that block virtually all light — ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. For the darkest possible result we can add side channels or an outside mount to reduce the small light gaps that form at the edges of any blind.
Can roller blinds and solar shades be motorized?
Yes. As an authorised Somfy dealer, we motorize both roller blinds and solar shades so you can raise and lower them by remote, the Somfy app, or voice through Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Motorization is especially worthwhile on large, tall, or hard-to-reach windows.
What are double roller blinds (dual roller blinds)?
Double roller blinds — also called dual roller blinds or day-night rollers — put two separate roller blinds on a single bracket: usually a light-filtering or solar shade paired with a blackout roller behind it. You pull down whichever you need — the sheer layer for a soft, private daytime look, or the blackout layer for sleep and full darkness. It’s a popular choice for bedrooms and nurseries where one window has to do both jobs. If you like the idea of switching between sheer and private but prefer it in one blind, our zebra blinds achieve a similar effect with alternating fabric bands.
Which rooms suit solar shades best?
Solar shades shine in living rooms, home offices, sunrooms, and any window with a view you don’t want to lose. They cut glare on screens and protect floors, furniture, and art from sun damage while keeping the room bright and the outlook open during the day.
Are your roller blinds & solar shades custom-made?
Every blind is custom-manufactured to your exact window measurements in the GTA. We measure width, height, recess depth, and mount type in person so the finished blind fits cleanly without light gaps — off-the-shelf sizes rarely sit right on real windows.
