Plantation shutters mounted directly onto a French door in a Toronto home

Door-mounted plantation shutters — Toronto

How they work

The shutter becomes part of the door

Some doors don’t want a shutter beside them — they want one on them. These panels are fixed to the door leaf itself rather than to the wall or an overhead track, so the shutter travels with the door as it swings.

A sliding or folding shutter needs somewhere to go: a track above the opening, wall space to stack against. A single swinging door gives you neither. Mounting the panel onto the door solves it completely — the door still works exactly as it always did, and the glass in it finally has privacy and light control. It’s the configuration we fit to French doors, single garden doors and glazed entry doors, and it’s part of our wider California shutter range.

Why door-mounted

Privacy on the glass, without losing the door

Your door still works

Nothing to slide aside first, nothing to fold back. Turn the handle and walk through — the shutter comes with you.

No stacking space needed

Because the panel lives on the door, you don’t give up any wall or floor space — which matters in hallways and entryways where there simply isn’t room.

Privacy on glazed doors

An entry door with glass shows your hallway to anyone at the step. Tilt the louvres and it doesn’t — while still letting the daylight through.

Built to the door, not the opening

We measure the door leaf itself, so the panel is sized to its proportions and to the hardware it already carries.

Options for your door

Because we manufacture in-house, every panel is drawn around your door — its proportions, its hardware and the way it swings. Nothing here comes off a shelf.

Good to know

Door shutter questions

What are door-mounted plantation shutters?
They’re shutter panels fixed directly onto the door itself rather than onto the wall or an overhead track. The shutter becomes part of the door, so it swings with it every time you open and close. This is the configuration used for French doors, single garden doors and entry doors with glass, where a sliding or folding shutter would block the door from opening.
Will the shutter clear my door handle?
That’s the first thing we check when we measure. We look at the lever, knob and deadbolt your door actually carries, and build the panel around that hardware — it’s the detail that decides whether a door-mounted shutter will work at all, so we confirm it on site before anything is made.
Will shutters be too heavy for my door?
Weight is a genuine consideration, because everything you add to a door leaf is carried by its hinges. We size the panel and choose the material with that in mind, and on lighter doors we’ll usually recommend vinyl or PVC over wood. We assess the door and its hinges during the free in-home measurement.
Can I match door shutters to the shutters on my windows?
Yes, and it’s worth doing. Matching the louvre size, colour and finish across the room means the door reads as part of the same scheme rather than as a separate treatment. If you already have California shutters from us, we’ll match the existing specification.
Do shutters work on French doors?
Yes — French doors are the classic case. A panel is built for each leaf so the pair opens and closes as one balanced piece, and each side keeps its own louvre control for light and privacy.
Do you install door-mounted shutters across the GTA?
Yes. Starlight Shutter measures, manufactures and installs custom plantation shutters on doors across Toronto, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, North York, Newmarket, Aurora, Oshawa, Mississauga and surrounding areas.
