Zebra blinds — also called dual, banded, or day-night shades — layer two fabrics of alternating sheer and solid stripes. Slide the layers so the sheer bands line up for an open, light-filled view, or offset them so the solid bands overlap for privacy and shade. One blind, two completely different looks.

They’re the most adjustable blind we carry: a small movement takes you from a soft, striped daylight to near-full coverage, so a single window can feel open and bright by day and private by evening. The clean horizontal banding suits modern and transitional interiors alike.

What are zebra blinds, and what else are they called?

Zebra blinds are made from two layers of fabric with alternating sheer and solid horizontal bands. Sliding the layers lines the bands up for a sheer view or offsets them for privacy. Because that one movement takes you from open daylight to closed privacy, they’re also sold as dual shades, banded shades, and day-night shades.

How do zebra blinds actually work?

The two banded layers move against each other on a single roller. When the sheer bands of both layers align, you see through to a soft, striped view; as you move the blind, the solid bands gradually overlap the sheer ones until the window is fully covered. You can stop anywhere in between to dial in exactly the light and privacy you want.

Are zebra blinds private at night?

With the solid bands aligned, zebra blinds give good daytime privacy while still feeling light. At night, when interior lights are on, the sheer bands can allow some visibility, so for bedrooms we recommend a blackout-banded fabric or pairing the zebra with a separate blackout roller behind it. We’ll show you how each option behaves in your room’s light.

Can zebra blinds be blackout?

Yes. Zebra blinds come in light-filtering and blackout-banded fabrics. A blackout-banded zebra blocks far more light when closed, though for a fully dark room — a bedroom or nursery — a dedicated blackout roller still gives the most complete darkness. We’ll recommend the right fabric for each room.

Can zebra blinds be motorized?

Yes. As an authorised Somfy dealer, we motorize zebra blinds so you can align the bands and raise or lower them by remote, the Somfy app, or voice through Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Motorization is especially handy on large or hard-to-reach windows.

Are your zebra blinds custom-made?

Every blind is custom-manufactured to your exact window measurements in the GTA. We measure width, height, recess depth, and mount type in person so the bands line up cleanly and the blind fits without light gaps — off-the-shelf sizes rarely sit right on real windows.
