Skylights are the clearest case for motorization: they are impossible to reach by hand and they let in the most heat and UV of any window in the house. Are motorized blinds worth it?
For most homes, yes — especially anywhere reaching a window is awkward (skylights, tall stairwells, wide window walls) or where you want light to manage itself. Beyond the daily convenience, automated shades cut cooling and heating costs, protect furniture and floors from UV fading, remove all cords for a child- and pet-safe home, and add a genuine layer of luxury and resale appeal. The value is highest when shades run on a schedule or sun sensor, so they're working for you even when you're not thinking about them.
How long do the batteries last?
Rechargeable lithium motors typically run 6–12 months per charge depending on how often the shade moves and its size. A small solar accessory keeps them topped up near a bright window so you rarely — if ever — recharge manually. When you do, it's a simple USB-C cable. Hardwired motors, of course, never need charging.
Can I use Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomeKit?
Yes. All four brands we carry work with Alexa and Google Assistant. Somfy adds full Apple HomeKit through its TaHoma hub — the pick we recommend for Apple households. A-OK and Dooya connect via Tuya/SmartLife; Neo links over Wi-Fi with no hub. Once connected, you can group shades into scenes and routines alongside your lights and thermostat.
Can my existing blinds be motorized?
Often, yes. Roller shades, zebra blinds and curtain tracks can frequently be retrofitted with a tubular or curtain motor without replacing the whole product. Feasibility depends on tube diameter, bracket type and fabric weight, which we assess during your consultation. Where a retrofit isn't practical, we'll tell you honestly and quote a replacement instead.
What happens to my blinds during a power outage?
Wired motors (Somfy, A-OK, Dooya) hold their last position and most include a manual override. Battery and rechargeable motors are unaffected, since they run independently of your home's electrical system.
Do I need an electrician for the installation?
It depends on the power option. Battery, rechargeable and solar motors need zero electrical work. Hardwired motors need a 120V outlet near the window; if new wiring is required we coordinate a licensed electrician and manage the whole project for you.
Does it work with Control4?
Yes. Our Somfy motors integrate with Control4 — the whole-home automation system most common in Canadian homes — through a certified driver, so your shades join the same scenes as your lighting, climate and AV from one keypad or touchscreen. If you're building or already run a Control4 home, we'll spec a Somfy system to match.
Can I control multiple blinds at the same time?
Yes. Every system supports group control — assign blinds to a remote channel, build room scenes in the app, or set whole-home schedules. Multi-channel remotes manage 15+ blinds from one device.
What types of window treatments can be motorized?
Almost everything: roller shades, zebra/dual shades, cellular/honeycomb shades (including skylights), Roman shades, sheers, curtains and drapes on motorized tracks, and horizontal and vertical blinds.
Is the installation covered by a warranty?
Yes — a lifetime warranty on labour and hardware. Motors and remotes are covered 3–5 years by brand (Somfy 5 years; A-OK, Dooya and Neo 3 years). If something stops working after we leave, we come back at no charge.
