Starlight Shutter (“Starlight Shutter,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) makes and installs custom window treatments for homes and businesses in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. This privacy policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to our website at starlightshutter.com, to our showrooms, and to the measurement, quotation, installation, and service work we do for you.

1. What information we collect
Information you give us
You give us personal information when you book a consultation, request a quote, visit one of our showrooms, place an order, or contact us by phone, email, or social media. Depending on what you are asking us to do, this may include:
- your name;
- your phone number and email address;
- the address where the work will be done, and the type of property;
- details about your project — the rooms, windows, measurements, product choices, fabrics and finishes, and any notes about timing or access;
- photographs of your windows or rooms, where you or our installer take them so we can quote or manufacture accurately;
- your order, deposit, and balance records.
We do not take payments through this website. Deposits and balances are paid in person, by e-transfer, or by other arrangements made directly with us, and we do not store full credit card numbers.
Information collected automatically
When you visit starlightshutter.com, some information is collected automatically by our website and the analytics and advertising tools described in sections 3 and 5. This includes your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, the pages you view, how you arrived at the site, and the approximate general area you are browsing from. On its own this does not identify you by name.
Information from other sources
If you contact us through Instagram, Facebook, or Google, we receive the information those platforms pass on — usually a display name and the content of your message. If someone refers you to us, we may record that they did.
We do not buy customer lists, and we do not collect information about you from data brokers.
2. Why we collect it
We use your personal information to:
- arrange and carry out in-home measurement appointments, showroom consultations, quotations, orders, manufacturing, delivery, and installation;
- answer your questions and provide customer service, including warranty and repair work;
- send you information about your appointment, order, or installation;
- send you occasional marketing about our products and promotions, if you have not told us you would rather not hear from us;
- show you relevant advertising, and measure whether our advertising works (see section 5);
- understand how our website is used so we can improve it;
- keep proper business records, and meet our tax, accounting, and other legal obligations.
We collect only what we need for these purposes. If we ever want to use your information for something not described here, we will ask you first.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies, including small pieces of code provided by other companies, to keep the site working, understand how visitors use it, and measure our advertising. The tools currently in use are:
- Google Analytics — to see which pages people visit and how they move through the site;
- Google Ads — to measure whether someone who clicked one of our ads went on to book a consultation;
- Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram) — for the same purpose on our Meta advertising.
You can clear or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking them will not stop you using the site, though some things may not work as smoothly. Most browsers also offer a “Do Not Track” setting; because there is still no agreed industry standard for how websites should respond to that signal, we do not currently act on it, and we will say so here if that changes.
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these situations:
- Service providers and suppliers. Companies that do work for us and need the information to do it — our website host, our booking and email systems, our manufacturers and fabricators, our installers, and our advertising and analytics providers. They may use your information only to provide the service we have asked them for.
- Advertising platforms. Described separately in section 5, because you have a choice about it.
- Professional advisors. Our accountants, insurers, and lawyers, where they need the information to advise us.
- When the law requires it. If we are required to by law, a court order, or a lawful request from a public authority, or where we need to establish or defend a legal claim.
- If the business changes hands. If Starlight Shutter is sold, merged, or reorganised, customer information may transfer with the business. If that happens, the information stays subject to a policy no less protective than this one.
5. Advertising, and how to opt out
We advertise on Google and on Meta’s platforms (Facebook and Instagram). To do this well, we share customer contact information — your name, email address, phone number, or postal code — with those platforms.
The information is hashed before it is sent, which means it is converted into a scrambled string that the platform cannot read as your actual details. The platform uses it to check whether you already have an account with them, so that we can:
- show our advertising to you, or deliberately stop showing it to you if you are already a customer;
- show our advertising to other people whose interests resemble those of our existing customers;
- measure how our advertising performs.
We share the minimum needed to do this, we do not send information about your project or your order value in a form tied to your name, and we do not sell your information to anyone.
You can opt out at any time. Email sales@starlightshutter.com or call (416) 347-4682 and ask us not to use your information for advertising. We will remove you from these lists, and opting out will not affect your order, your warranty, or the service you receive from us in any way.
You can also control personalised advertising directly in your Google account settings and your Facebook or Instagram ad preferences.
6. Where your information is stored
Our website is hosted by Hostinger, and its servers are located in the United States. Some of the other companies we work with — including Google and Meta — also store and process information outside Canada.
This means your personal information may be sent to another country for processing. While it is in that country, it is subject to that country’s laws, and may be accessible to its courts, law enforcement agencies, and national security authorities. We remain responsible for your information while our service providers hold it, and we require them to protect it to a standard comparable to our own.
7. How long we keep it
We keep customer records for as long as we have an ongoing relationship with you and for as long afterwards as we need them — to honour warranties, to supply matching or replacement products, to handle service calls, and to meet the record-keeping periods required by tax and business law. Enquiries that do not become orders are kept for a shorter period.
When we no longer have a reason to keep your information, we delete it or remove the details that identify you. If you ask us to delete your information sooner, see section 9.
8. How we protect it
We take reasonable steps to protect your information against loss, theft, and unauthorised access, including limiting access to the staff who need it to do their jobs. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security — but if something happens that puts your information at real risk of harm, we will tell you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as the law requires.
9. Your rights and choices
Starlight Shutter operates in Ontario and handles personal information in accordance with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). You have the right to:
- Access your information. Ask us what personal information we hold about you and how we have used it. We will respond within 30 days, and normally at no cost.
- Correct it. Ask us to fix anything inaccurate or incomplete.
- Withdraw your consent. Tell us to stop using your information for marketing or advertising at any time. This will not affect any order you have placed or any warranty you hold. Some uses we cannot stop — for example, keeping the invoice for an order you have already placed, which we are required to retain.
- Ask us to delete it. We will do so unless we are required to keep it for legal, tax, or warranty reasons, in which case we will tell you which records we are keeping and why.
- Complain. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information or your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca or 1-800-282-1376.
To exercise any of these, email sales@starlightshutter.com or call (416) 347-4682. We may ask you to confirm your identity before we act, so that we do not give your information to someone else.
10. Children
Our services are meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed, and the current version is always the one on this page. If we make a significant change — particularly one that affects how we share your information — we will make that clear, and where the change requires it we will ask for your consent.
